The NSW licence ladder

Which class covers what, and what each rung requires. The clock on every gate is time holding the previous licence, so your next rung may already be open.

C

Where everyone starts

Your car licence. The ladder cares how long you've held it: one year opens LR and MR, two years opens HR directly.

LR MR

Gate: class C held 1 year or more

Light Rigid covers small trucks and buses up to 8 tonne GVM. Medium Rigid covers two-axle trucks and buses over 8 tonnes. Both allow a towed trailer up to 9 tonnes. MR is where most delivery and small bus work starts.

HR

Gate: class C held 2 years or more

Heavy Rigid: trucks and buses with three or more axles, including bendy buses. You don't need LR or MR first: two years on a car licence takes you straight here, and it's the class most local freight and bus jobs ask for.

HC

Gate: MR or HR held 1 year (unrestricted to train)

Heavy Combination: articulated vehicles. A prime mover and semi-trailer, or a rigid truck towing a trailer over 9 tonnes. Time on a P2 MR/HR counts toward the year, but you must hold the unrestricted licence before you can train for HC.

MC

Gate: HR or HC held 1 year + medical assessment

Multi Combination: B-doubles and road trains, the top of the ladder: everything except motorcycles. Coming from HR rather than HC, you'll pass an HC assessment before MC training starts. A medical assessment is required either way.
